Call Me When You’re Sober

I’m not exactly sure why I chose to write about this topic, which leads me to believe that I have some reservations about sharing as it relates to alcoholism. While plugged into YouTube and looking for music to feature, I came across ‘Evanescence and Call Me When You’re Sober’. That led to some poking around the internet to see if there was a true story behind the lyrics*.  Turns out Amy Lee’s (Evanescence) former beau went into rehab the day this song came out and he, Shaun Morgan of the group ‘Seether’, reacted with a song of his own entitled ‘Breakdown’. Morgan was noted* as saying that the (Amy’s) song was “melodramatic” and claims he drank to deal with feeling trapped and angry in the relationship. It’s interesting to hear their versions through music, both great songs by the way and featured here.

Without getting into too much detail, I grew up around people who seemed to drink too much –harmless, or so I thought then. It’s what I knew.  Some of my friends were unpredictable; happy one day, sad and angry the next.  It seems as though they were always in need of help – late for work, fell at home or needing bail money – causing me to feel angry at times for what seemed to be a one-way street in my relationships. So much so that I drifted from these friendships, grew tired of the hassles, lies and constant nurturing.  There was no way to comprehend what was happening at the time; I simply didn’t understand.

Today, as there was then, help is everywhere for those suffering from Alcoholism directly and indirectly.  It is difficult to watch people and relationships torn apart, just as it is gratifying to witness friends get help and completely recover.  Don’t catch yourself saying you wish you could’ve done more. Talk to someone who understands what you are going through.
